Difference between a buttered board and no butter.

How to Care for Your End-Grain Cutting Board

You've invested in a beautiful handcrafted end-grain cutting board — now let's make sure it lasts a lifetime. End-grain boards are prized by chefs and BBQ pitmasters alike for their self-healing properties and knife-friendly surface, but they do require a little love to stay in top condition.

1. Hand Wash Only

Never put your end-grain board in the dishwasher. The heat and prolonged moisture will cause the wood to crack and warp. Instead, wipe the board with a clean damp cloth and dry it immediately with a towel.

2. Dry It Standing Up

After washing, stand your board on its edge or prop it up so air can circulate on both sides. This prevents moisture from sitting on one side and causing the board to warp over time.

3. Oil Regularly

End-grain boards are thirsty — they absorb oil readily through the exposed wood fibers. Apply a food-safe mineral oil or our Board Butter (a blend of beeswax and mineral oil) once a month, or whenever the wood looks dry. Simply apply generously, let it soak in for a few hours, then wipe off the excess with a clean cloth. Make sure to apply to both sides of board.

4. Use Board Butter for Extra Protection

For a deeper conditioning treatment, follow up your oil application with Board Butter. The beeswax creates a protective barrier on the surface that repels moisture and keeps your board looking rich and dark.

5. Avoid Soaking and Extreme Heat

Never submerge your board in water or leave it sitting in a puddle of liquid. Similarly, keep it away from direct heat sources like stovetops or sunny windowsills. Extreme temperature changes can cause cracking.

6. Remove Odours Naturally

If your board picks up strong odours from garlic or onions, sprinkle coarse salt on the surface and rub it with half a lemon. The salt acts as an abrasive and the lemon juice neutralizes odours naturally.

How Often Should You Oil Your Board?

A good rule of thumb: oil your board when it starts to look lighter in colour or feels dry to the touch. For a new board, we recommend oiling it 3–4 times in the first month to fully saturate the wood.

With proper care, your Sawdust Studio Canada end-grain board will be a centrepiece in your kitchen or at your BBQ for decades to come.
